Question: Is it possible for someone to come to saving faith in God based only on His creation, without knowledge of Jesus?
Answer: No. Scripture is clear that faith comes through Jesus Christ. Romans 10:14-17 emphasizes this point: “14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Romans 1:16 also sheds light on the saving effect of the Gospel: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
However, I do believe that everyone who is open to God revealing Himself through creation will eventually hear the Gospel. God will respond to that person’s trust and get the Gospel to him or her some way. This is the mandate for missions. Our job is to go to those who see God through creation but don’t know about God sending Jesus.
